Barbeau was an eminent figure in Canadian anthropology, whose work contributed significantly to Ottawa's Canadian Museum of Civilization collections. He is celebrated for his research on the North Pacific Coast and for his definitive studies of totem poles and fieldwork with Tsimsyan, Haida, and Tlingit.
