The Ontario Legislature and Provincial Affairs, 1943-1951

This category concerns Robinson's role as M.L.A. Included is material on the work of the legislature, various government departments, and agencies, the role of the C.C.F. caucus, and C.C.F. policy, briefs by various lobbies and organizations, and background information on legislative matters. Also included is material concerning Robinson's activities as M.L.A. for Port Arthur, both in the house and in the riding. Since Robinson held civic office during this period, some of the material relates directly to civic affairs.

Local and Municipal Affairs

This category relates to Robinson's role in civic affairs, as school trustee, as alderman, and as mayor. It also includes material relating to civic election campaigns. Of prime interest are the folders relating to Canadian oil and gas pipelines controversies in which Robinson as mayor played a leading post.

Political Affairs (relating to the CCF)

These folders are listed topically into five sections:

  1. Provincial elections; 2. C.C.F. National and Provincial Offices; 3. Port Arthur Constituency; 4. Radio and Publicity; 5. Federal Affairs, 1957-63.

Within each section the material is organized chronologically where feasible. The files include correspondence, literature and other material emanating from the national, provincial and local C.C.F. Also included is material from other political parties.

Provincial and Local Affairs

This category relates to Robinson's dual roles in civic and provincial affairs, although material of national significance is sometimes included. The first three files relate to the history of the origins of Lakehead University and the local campaigns to obtain a university or institute of higher learning in Northwest Ontario. Robinson was in the forefront of this campaign, beginning with his election to the Board of Education; he continued to promote the university in the legislature and in government circles. Other folders relate to the ship-building crisis in the Lakehead, and other issues of local and broader concern.

Correspondence

Correspondence between Claude E. Garton and various universities, museums, and other scientists. Also correspondence of Erica North, Joan Crowe, and Terri McClymont.

This section includes correspondence mostly of a personal nature and other material which is self-explanatory from the titles.

Notebooks

The notebooks contain Garton's plant observations, each observation on one page. Some of the notebooks created carbon copies of each observation record.

Cards

Specimen cards for Garton's collection, arranged by date of collection. The specimens form the initial collection of the Herbarium.

Northwestern Ontario Fish Inventory Collection

Fish inventory studies were conducted by Walter Momot, Sam Stephenson, and the students of biology class 4221, to examine trends in abundance and population variables for key indicator fish species. Sam Stephenson was a University of Manitoba Ph.D. student working with Momot as a teaching assistant. Connie Hartviksen, LU biology research and teaching assistant, performed taxonomic verifications and notations.

Connie Hartviksen noted on February 14, 1992, the status of their inventory since 1988 had collected specimens from 120 creeks and rivers, approximately 155 lakes in Northwestern Ontario.

The LU data collection including biology 4221 class represents 150 streams, 4x 150 for river data and 640 lakes concentrated in the Great Lakes-St Lawrence Primary watershed division, 2nd and 5th secondary watershed divisions in Ontario, within those two divisions 10 tertiary watershed divisions 2AD (units; 22, 19,1,4,5,6,24,23,7,10,9,11,13), 2AE (2), 4GA(16), 5QA(units; 8,4), 5PB(units; 1, 25,5,24,22,23) 5PA(3,5,7,8), 2AA(units; 1,2,3,4), 4GB(units 5,4,3,11), 2AB (all units,5 Lake Superior tributaries, 2AC (all units except 4 and 5, 21 Lake Superior tributaries)

This collection includes correspondence between Dr. Crossman and Dr. Momot regarding the verification of rare fish species. These fish have either been introduced or adapting to an environmental stressor such as climate change. Positive identification is an important step to mapping and documenting changes to their distribution overtime.
