Local and Municipal Affairs

This category relates to Robinson's role in civic affairs, as school trustee, as alderman, and as mayor. It also includes material relating to civic election campaigns. Of prime interest are the folders relating to Canadian oil and gas pipelines controversies in which Robinson as mayor played a leading post.

General

This category is divided into two sections: 1. Background material from newspaper, labour organizations, and community groups, political groups and corporations on a multitude of topics in which Robinson was interested during his public career. 2. Files started by Mr. Robinson in 1959. In this year, Mr. Robinson 'Clipped and filed' on a number of subjects. Some of these clippings were included
in files started earlier but most are in separate files begun in 1959. Some of the material is of local interest.

Miscellaneous

This section includes correspondence mostly of a personal nature and other material which is self-explanatory from the titles.

C.D. Howe Collection

This collection is of recordings, photographs, and ephemera related to C.D. Howe, the engineer, contractor, and long-time Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister. It includes:

  • Recorded broadcast of Howe interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting Association in 1955
  • Recordings of a documentary on Howe's life
  • Letters and clippings on the Howe Committee after Howe's death

Pigeon River Lumber Company fonds

Correspondence and papers of the Pigeon River Lumber Company, primarily in the 1930s and 1940s. Includes the original Letters Patent. Many of the records relate to lands in the Township of Pardee.

Lakehead University fonds

Lakehead University evolved from the Lakehead Technical Institute (LTI), which was established in 1946. From LTI, Lakehead became the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology in 1956. The Lakehead University Act was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1965, and Lakehead University was established. The first degrees granted by Lakehead University were in Arts and Science in 1965.

The Lakehead University fonds includes records of administrative offices and former administrators.

Finnish Building Company fonds

The Finnish Building Company was formed in 1909 and raised funds for the construction of the Finnish Labour Temple (Big Finn Hall) at 314 Bay Street.

The records of Alexander Phillips, Manager of the Northwestern Ontario Development Association, relating to business and industrial development and policy throughout the region.

Hoito Restaurant

The Hoito Cooperative Restaurant was established in 1918, to serve the needs of Finnish-Canadian workers in Port Arthur, and still operates from the Finnish Labour Temple, 314 Bay Street.

This collection is made up of minute books and account books covering the early years of the restaurant's operations.
