Growth Initiatives

The LUF has changed mission statements a few times since its creation as the members change and the times develop. But regardless of the changes in detail, mission statements have always implied the need to grow as a community. The LUF has been committed to projects and programs that strengthen their congregation and their role in the Thunder Bay community. This series reflects how the LUF have consistently looked for and discussed ways to grow and develop.

Area: Northwestern Ontario

Consists of several reports, convention notes, and event pamphlets of the Northwestern Ontario reporting area of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario. The Province was divided by the Federation into 14 broad reporting areas. Districts and Branches fall within each Area.

These documents can all be found in General Archive #255.

There are also collections of news clippings which span the Ontario-wide, Area, District, and Branch categories. These can be found in General Archives #255 and #143 (Box 45).

District: Thunder Bay

Meeting Minutes, cashbooks, and other administrative documents relating to the Thunder Bay District of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario.

Muskoka Conference

Records and materials relating to the International Symposium on Acidic Precipitation, September 15-20, 1985, Muskoka. Includes papers, photographs, published proceedings.

Board and Financial Records

Records generated by Board activities kept by Ernie Epp through his time as a Board member and then Treasurer. Includes financial records and tax returns. Original arrangement by year (annual meeting to annual meeting) has been largely retained.

Writing

Through her involvement with the Northern Woman's Bookstore and writing groups, Margaret wrote and edited poetry, short stories, and memoirs. This series includes some of her more polished works, as well as drafts and notes.

Conferences

This series consists of correspondence, pamphlets, and various other material related the Ontario Naturalists Conferences held in Thunder Bay. The series is composed of the following files:

50th Anniversary

This series consists of a certificate, and notes related to the celebration of the Field Naturalists’ 50th Anniversary. The series is composed of the following file:

Bay Street Project

Records and reference material from five major research projects sponsored by the Finlandia Club and other organizations.

  • Bay Street Project I: A study of Finnish immigration to Canada
  • Bay Street Project II: A study of Finnish settlements in the rural Thunder Bay District
  • Bay Street Project III: A study of sports and athletics in the Finnish community in Thunder Bay
  • Bay Street Project IV: A study of religion and churches in the Finnish community in Thunder Bay
  • Bay Street Project V: A study of the arts in the Finnish community in Thunder Bay, including literature, theatre, and music

Finnish Building Company

The Finnish Building Company was formed in 1909 and raised funds for the construction of the Finnish Labour Temple (Big Finn Hall) at 314 Bay Street which was completed by March, 1910. The building became a focal point for local and regional labour and community activities. The Finnish Building Company is in existence today though the majority block of shares in the Labour Temple has changed hands on several occasions.

The series consists primarily of financial records.

Hoito Restaurant

The Hoito was established in 1918 as a cooperative restaurant in response to a need by lumberworkers and others for good and reasonably priced meals. The restaurant rented premises from the Labour Temple.

The series consists primarily of invoices, receipts, cheques, etc.
