Annual Reports

Annual Reports were produced for the Meetings of the Board of Directors. Each Annual Report consists of reports from the President, the Deans of each department, the Librarian, the Registrar, and the directors of Finance and Physical Plant, describing events and matters of concern throughout the year. Some reports also cover the history of Lakehead University.

Financial Statements

Institutional financial records, prepared by chartered accountants. The records contain financial statements and reports on matters such as mortgages and loans, litigation, and liabilities, as well as major expenses incurred during the year.

Other Reports

An assortment of reports and proposals, including extensive plans for the development of Lakehead University. Budgets, land use, programme expansion, and blueprints of University buildings are included.

Royal Commission on the Northern Environment

The Royal Commission on the Northern Environment was established in 1977, and produced a final report in 1985. In between, the Commission held consultations and solicited briefs from a wide array of interested people, businesses, and organizations. Parks for Tomorrow’s brief for the Commission is included as well as many others, along with transcripts, reports, and recommendations.

Forest Management Agreements

Parks for Tomorrow was asked by MNR regularly to comment as part of public consultation processes on new Forest Management Agreements. These records include background information and copies of many of these Agreements.

Herbarium Papers

Records related to the Herbarium collection and the preparation of the Index of Specimens. Includes three volumes of collection records, a working copy of the Index, and final version of the Index.

Notebooks

The notebooks contain Garton's plant observations, each observation on one page. Some of the notebooks created carbon copies of each observation record.

Cards

Specimen cards for Garton's collection, arranged by date of collection. The specimens form the initial collection of the Herbarium.

Personal Papers

Includes some of Garton's correspondence and writings, some correspondence copied or forwarded from other naturalists, one personal diary from 1987, and a set of hand-drawn diagrams of plant biology.

Bay Street Project

Records and reference material from five major research projects sponsored by the Finlandia Club and other organizations.

  • Bay Street Project III: A study of sports and athletics in the Finnish community in Thunder Bay

Finnpraxis Project

Collected records related to organized labour and the Finnish community in Thunder Bay. Include records related to the Canadan Suomalaisen Jarjesto (Finnish Organization of Canada), Vapaus Publishing Company, Canadan Farmarien Yhteysliitto (Farmers' Unity League of Canada), Lumber & Agricultural Workers Industrial Union of Canada.

Also includes forms and notes related to oral history interviews.

Development of the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University

Series consists of the formation of the Faculty of Education records made and received by the Dean of the Faculty of Education in the course of administering its programs and operations. Activities documented include legal agreements, revised constitutions, bylaws and memorandum of understanding. Records also include policy, administrative and teaching decisions, degree and staffing structure, curriculum and programmes, budgets and correspondence with various universities. Also included are articles and papers on graduate studies in education in the province of Ontario; Teachers’ College and universities assuming responsibility for teacher education and Teachers’ College affiliation with universities; the MacLeod Report is frequently mentioned. Proposals include: reorganization of the student teaching programmes in elementary education; proposed organization of the Faculty of Education. Policy statements include: OCUFA (Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations) statement on amalgamation of Elementary Teachers’ College with the universities.

Faculty of Education programmes

The series consists of records made and received by the Dean of the Faculty of Education in the course of implementing and administering new programmes in education at Lakehead University. Programmes include Master of Education (M.Ed); four year bachelor of education and a two year diploma Native Teacher Education Programme. Legal records include: Lakehead University Senate, O.C.G.S (Ontario Council on Graduates Studies) and Ministry of Colleges and Universities approval for implementation of M.Ed Programme; appraisal committees report to O.C.G.S on proposed Master of Education Programs; appraisals by consultants for M.Ed Programme; Minister of Education O.T.F (Ontario Teachers’ Federation) and the National Indian Brotherhood. Records also include memos, internal and external, curriculum development; a Report of a survey of the interests and opinions of Northwestern Ontario educators in regard to masters programmes in education. Records include external memos from OISE(Ontario Institute for Study in Education); course outlines; general information papers on M.Ed programme; regulations and guidelines for M.Ed projects; and a proposal for a grant-in-aid for a planning specialist to develop programs in teacher education for teachers in Indian schools.

Recreation

Records of Margaret Phillips's early career as Municipal Director of Recreation in several communities, and her involvement with the Society of Directors of Municipal Recreation in Ontario, Northwestern Ontario Directors of Recreation Association/Northwestern Ontario Professional Recreation Society, and other organizations.
