Marion Henderson (1908-1988) was an author, musician, music teacher, and active volunteer.

She began her work as a music teacher, first in Iroquois Falls, then at the Lakehead from 1949 to 1973. She was a singer and choir leader, and played organ and flute. As a researcher and author, she was interested in early European settlers in Fort William, and wrote historical fiction, children’s literature, book reviews, and articles. She also worked in school libraries, and after retirement was a volunteer indexer at the Brodie Library (Thunder Bay Public Library).

Inge Rakovszky worked as a library technician at the Brodie Library from 1969 to 1989. During this time she worked closely with Marion Henderson, as well as other local historians such as Elizabeth Arthur, Ernst Zimmermann, and Joseph Mauro. She assisted Henderson in the last years of her life, including with the distribution of papers and published material.

These records were kept by Inge Rakovszky until their donation to Lakehead University Archives in 2024.

The records consist of some correspondence, copies of Marion Henderson’s writings, and a set of photographic sides.

Sanna Kannasto fonds

Records created and kept by Sanna Kannasto, from the years 1930-1931. Includes minutes of District 6 (Northwestern Ontario) of the Työlais Naisten Liiitto (T.N.L.), Working Women's League, of which Kannasto was secretary. Also includes correspondence; writings on how to run meetings and how to establish a co-operative; and material produced by other organizations such as the Workers' Unity League of Canada.

Sanna Kannasto (1878-1968) was a Finnish socialist organizer and feminist active in Port Arthur and Northwestern Ontario for much of her life. She was associated with the Canadan Suomalainen Järjestö / Finnish Organization of Canada, and travelled, speaking to workers and women across Northwestern Ontario.

These records provide a small window onto Kannasto's activities in 1930-1931. They may have been hidden intentionally due to RCMP interference in her work.

Rev. William (Bill) S. Morris fonds

William S. Morris (1916-1983) was a faculty member in Philosophy at Lakehead from 1968 until his retirement in 1982. He completed his PhD at the University of Chicago in 1955. The Morris Lectures were established as a memorial after his death in 1983.

These records consist of lecture notes for a course or courses at Lakehead looking at the historical development of Western Philosophy. They are grouped by their subject matter, and Morris' titles have been retained.

St. Urho's Day Collection

St. Urho's Day is celebrated on March 16 each year in Thunder Bay, as well as in many Finnish-Canadian and Finnish-American Communities. These records relate to both the wider holiday and to its celebration in Thunder Bay.

St. Urho is a [fictional] Finnish saint, renowned for driving the grasshoppers (or, in early legends, frogs) out of the Finnish vineyards. The story of St. Urho originated in Minnesota in the 1950s, and it has over time become a popular aspect of Finnish-American and Finnish-Canadian culture. People wear purple and green to participate in parades, celebrations, and performances.

Photograph album by David Anderson, who served with the Canadian Navy, based in Halifax during the Second World War period. Album is labelled "Halifax War Time 39/45." The photographs include images of ships, aircraft, Navy life, and also include a set of images of celebrations of the end of the war in 1945. Anderson was from Thunder Bay.

Holly Parsons fonds

Consists of a memoir written by Horace Hunter "Holly" Parsons, an aerial timber sketcher whose career spanned over 50 years. This memoir contains information about the contracts he fulfilled for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, formerly the Department of Forests and Lands, and various logging, pulp, and paper corporations. Some contracts also involved mapping out the borders of areas where forest fires had occurred. These contracts spanned across Ontario and parts of Quebec, with a focus on the areas surrounding the District of Thunder Bay. Included in the memoir are personal anecdotes, descriptions of his trips, crew members he worked with over the years, and photographs taken by or given to "Holly" Parsons.

Dates of the memoir and accompanying photographs range 1922-1976.

Horace Hunter "Holly" Parsons (1902-1990) was born in Owen Sound, Ontario and lived in Etobicoke, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1925 with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry.

C.D. Howe Collection

Dr. Ellie Prepas fonds

The records consist primarily of several decades of research data from the study of water quality in lakes. Prepas, who is Professor Emeritus of Natural Resource Management at Lakehead University, was also formerly employed at the University of Alberta. Much of the research was conducted on Alberta lakes, with some performed in Northwestern Ontario as well. A significant portion of the third accession consists of slides and print photographs showing research activities.

The records also include some teaching notes and course materials, as well as some correspondence and administrative material.

Lakehead Social History Institute fonds

The Lakehead Social History Institute is a partnership between historical researchers at Lakehead University and members of the Thunder Bay community. Active since 1997, the Institute supports and promotes historical research in the Northwestern Ontario region. The Institute facilitates research, trains new researchers, disseminates information about historical resources, conducts workshops, assists educational and community organizations, supports historical publications, and encourages local groups to preserve archival materials.

The fonds includes meeting minutes, correspondence, research projects, funding applications, workshop materials, membership lists, and publications. It also contains records of collaborations with educational institutions and community organizations, reflecting the Institute’s commitment to advancing historical research and public engagement.

Personal and professional writing of Dr. Claude Liman, professor of English at Lakehead University. His work focused on teaching American Literature, poetry and creative writing at Lakehead.

The contents of his journals include daily life, and reflections on teaching and his career. The letters chronicle his private and professional life, and include correspondence both sent and received.The records also reflect his involvement in sports, particularly skiing, but also golf, cycling, and running.

Records have been arranged into four series: Journals, Letters, Writing, and Teaching.

Labour Temple Time Capsule

This time capsule reflects the intentions of the builders of the Labour Temple at the start of construction. It demonstrates an awareness of posterity and their hopes for the cultural significance of the building. The documents clearly reflect the socialist beliefs of the builders.
