Local and Municipal Affairs

This category relates to Robinson's role in civic affairs, as school trustee, as alderman, and as mayor. It also includes material relating to civic election campaigns. Of prime interest are the folders relating to Canadian oil and gas pipelines controversies in which Robinson as mayor played a leading post.

Political Affairs (relating to the CCF)

These folders are listed topically into five sections:

  1. Provincial elections; 2. C.C.F. National and Provincial Offices; 3. Port Arthur Constituency; 4. Radio and Publicity; 5. Federal Affairs, 1957-63.

Within each section the material is organized chronologically where feasible. The files include correspondence, literature and other material emanating from the national, provincial and local C.C.F. Also included is material from other political parties.

General

This category is divided into two sections: 1. Background material from newspaper, labour organizations, and community groups, political groups and corporations on a multitude of topics in which Robinson was interested during his public career. 2. Files started by Mr. Robinson in 1959. In this year, Mr. Robinson 'Clipped and filed' on a number of subjects. Some of these clippings were included
in files started earlier but most are in separate files begun in 1959. Some of the material is of local interest.

Area: Northwestern Ontario

Consists of several reports, convention notes, and event pamphlets of the Northwestern Ontario reporting area of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario. The Province was divided by the Federation into 14 broad reporting areas. Districts and Branches fall within each Area.

There are also collections of news clippings which span the Ontario-wide, Area, District, and Branch categories. These can be found in General Archives #255 and #143 (Box 45).

Branches

Photographs (12 in General #189 branch minute book), meeting minutes, cashbooks, and other administrative documents of various Northwestern Ontario branches of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario. Branches include; the Port Arthur Branch; the Beardmore Branch; the Raith Branch; the Finnish Branch; the Murillo Branch.

Miscellaneous

Consists of additional organizations affiliated with labour and the Finnish immigrant experience. Materials on the Temperance Society, Defence Leagues, Workers International Relief, Finnish Organization of Canada, Finnish Socialist Local, INudstrial Worker, Work People's College, Communist Party, Lumberworkers International Union of Canada, numerous membership cards, community clubs, cooperative stores, photographs, and framed watercolours.

Finnish Building Company

The Finnish Building Company was formed in 1909 and raised funds for the construction of the Finnish Labour Temple (Big Finn Hall) at 314 Bay Street which was completed by March, 1910. The building became a focal point for local and regional labour and community activities. The Finnish Building Company is in existence today though the majority block of shares in the Labour Temple has changed hands on several occasions.

The series consists primarily of financial records.

Vapaus Publishing Company

Records of the Vapaus Publishing Company, responsible for producing Vapaus newspaper and Liekki literary magazine. Includes reports, minutes, and financial records. Also includes a variety of publications.

Board of Directors' Meeting Minutes

Six ledgers containing the Board of Directors' Meeting minutes from its founding in 1928 through its cessation in 1969 and liquidation through 1972.

Subjects covered include: operations of the Dairy; costs and revenues; unionization, wages, and benefits; hirings and terminations; and more.

Herbarium Papers

Records related to the Herbarium collection and the preparation of the Index of Specimens. Includes three volumes of collection records, a working copy of the Index, and final version of the Index.

Coalition for Wilderness

The Coalition for Wilderness, initially proposed by Addison, represented five groups in speaking for wilderness parks in Ontario: Algonquin Wildlands League, Canadian Nature Federation, Federation of Ontario Naturalists, National and Provincial Parks Association of Canada, and Sierra Club Ontario Chapter.
