Living Legacy Trust

As the Lands for Life project concluded, the Province designated the Living Legacy Trust fund to support land use planning and natural resources and environmental management. This fund ran from 1999 to 2004, and remaining monies were granted to Lakehead University for related projects.

The records here consist mostly of reports of projects funded by the Trust.

TBFCHS Notes & Research

Series includes: records concerning annual celebrations of Finnish heritage and culture in different cities in the US and Canada. Booklets on People's Co-operative 1934-44 and the Finnish-Directory Thunder Bay District 1935. Various grants from Finland Society, Heritage Organization Development and Secretary of State grant for a travelling exhibit of the display panels in Northwestern Ontario. The organization and structure of the Committee on Finnish-Canadian Studies at Lakehead University 1975 and various minutes of the Committee on Finnish-Canadian Studies, proposed and accepted constitution of the Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society and copies of History Notes Newsletter of the TBFCHS, 1990, which outlined published books Project Bay Street (1989) and A Chronicle of Finnish Settlements in Rural Thunder Bay (1996). Incorporation as a non-profit organization, letter of understanding between Lakehead University Library and TBFCHS, affiliation with Ontario Historical Society, request for share certificates held in the Capital Stock of the Finnish Building Company Limited (sale of the Finnish Labour Temple to Finlandia Club of Port Arthur, 2010). Canadian Suomi Foundation donation to the Lakehead University Finnish Chair Fund, 1992. Beginnings of Project Bay Street no. 5 on the cultural history of Northwestern Ontario to include music, theatre, art, craft, & literature with grant assistance from the Secretary of State Department, Student Community Services. Agreements 1979 between Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society and TBFCHS to accept on loan the collection of photographs, documents and artifacts.

A mixture of notes and poems in various stages of development and copies of works such as How to Coach Creative Writing, Landing, Across the Border. Also contains a few copies of Liman's thesis: Building the American House.

Photographs of the Northern Woman's Bookstore through the years, including people, events, and physical spaces.

Correspondence

Correspondence in both mailed letter and email formats to colleagues, friends and family. Topics include skiing, golf, sabbaticals, teaching at Lakehead, writing life and inquiries about getting published, and personal family matters.

Lakehead University Library Operations

Series consists of administrative files from the Principal and Office of the Chief Librarian including acquisitions, annual reports, collection development, building development, organizational charts, manuals and policies. Correspondence includes memos, letters, telex messages and campus newsletter, in addition miscellaneous questionnaires, surveys and detailed planning on new library building including furniture & equipment, shelving and space allocation.
The bulk of the records consist of inter-university correspondence providing insight into the workings of the library during a period of library and academic expansion, computerization and transition.

Teaching

Course syllabus and notes for ENGL 4811, ENGL 4813 and ENGL 3817. Contains records that show the progression of Liman's teaching career such as correspondence with his teacher, correspondence with a fellow professor at another university, journals and letters reflecting on his job, and documents from a ceremony acknowledging his teaching and poetry. Other writing included are a manuscript of a course textbook he wrote, How to Coach Creative Writing, and a few copies of his thesis: Building the American House. Some essays and articles that were written by him or his students are included as well.

Business Records

Documents regarding the business side of the bookstore. Includes financial material, flyers, newsletters, government documents, and others.

Social Policy and Activism

Records, documents, and correspondence relating to Margaret Phillips's work on social policy and rights in Thunder Bay and internationally. Includes her work with Lakehead Social Planning Council, Northern Ontario Women's Decade Council, Thunder Bay Literacy Group, and more. Much of her focus is on women's rights and issues affecting women in Northwestern Ontario and worldwide.

Correspondence

Correspondence between the Northern Woman's Bookstore and its customers, publishing and distribution personnel, and other feminist and local bookstores.

House of Commons

Records of Rafferty's two terms in the House of Commons as NDP MP, 2008-2011 and 2011-2015. Includes press releases, speeches, video recordings, clippings, scrapbooks, and day-timers.

Inter-Library Cooperation

Series consists of inter-university correspondence in the area of cooperation between the provincially-assisted universities to create a provincial library system in Ontario. Meeting minutes, reports, budget and salary surveys, task forces, questionnaires and cooperative projects include inter-university transit system, computerized cataloging, government documents project and cooperative union serials system.
Correspondence also includes telex messages with related societies and organizations.

Lakehead University Administration

Series consists of administrative files held by the Principal and Office of the Chief Librarian including faculty council minutes and correspondence, reports, policies and budgets created by the Academic Senate and its various committees. Also includes correspondence created by affiliated agencies.
Topics include proposed programs, enrollment, admission requirements, space allocation, governing post-secondary education and capital grants for future buildings and an ambitious five year plan.

Constituents

Correspondence with constituents, 2007-2015. Includes letters, thank-you cards, and postcards.

Research and Activism

Consists of files on a variety of issues affecting LGBTQ+ people in Northwestern Ontario particularly, and in Canada and worldwide. Files include correspondence, news clippings, and documents. Many files on local issues include material authored by Belrose.

Also includes records of local groups including Gays of Thunder Bay (1980-1993), Out and About, BGLLU, Pride Central, Northern Pride youth group, and AIDS Committee of Thunder Bay / AIDS Thunder Bay.
