This time capsule reflects the intentions of the builders of the Labour Temple at the start of construction. It demonstrates an awareness of posterity and their hopes for the cultural significance of the building. The documents clearly reflect the socialist beliefs of the builders.

Jo-Anne Silverman is a former head of the Development Office of Lakehead University. These records relate to university fundraising campaigns throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The fonds contains a small amount of internal documentation, but primarily consists of public-facing documents.

A media kit, produced by Grand Council Treaty Number 9. Titled "Reed's Greed," the materials here relate to opposition to Reed Paper (Canada) Ltd., the company responsible for mercury pollution in the English & Wabigoon River system, affecting the people of Grassy Narrows First Nation/Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishinabek.

Most material dates from 1976. At this time, Reed was planning an expansion of its forest products operations and requesting increased timber rights from the Ontario government. This is also a time after the mercury pollution had been identified by researchers and made known to governments, but long before any settlements were reached.

Documents include media releases, clippings, information sheets, and posters for protest events in Winnipeg.

Most materials are in English; some in an Indigenous language written in syllabics.

Records of Keewatinase, the Department of Indigenous Education, Faculty of Education, Lakehead University. A significant amount of the material relates to Native Language Instructors' Program, NLIP, after 2001 known as Anishinaabemowik.

The records include reports and administrative records, program newsletters, yearbooks, student and instructor handbooks, and ephemera.

Languages represented in the program include Ojibwe/Anishinaabemowin, Oji-Cree/Anishininimowin/Severn Ojibwe, and Cree/nēhiyawēwin.

Viljo Rosvall and Janne Voutilainen, while working to organize lumber workers with the Lumber Workers Industrial Union of Canada (LWIUC) at Onion Lake, disappeared in November 1929 and were later found dead. These deaths have been contested: many believe that they were killed for their work in the labour movement, while the official inquest stated their deaths were accidental and due to drowning.

This collection of records includes academic and popular articles related to the deaths of Rosvall and Voutilainen, and materials related to their grave site and memorials. The most significant item here is an affidavit made by Arthur Alanko to Ernie Epp and Paul Pugh: he states that while visiting Finland in 1990 he was given information about men who had killed Rosvall and Voutilainen and then returned to Finland. This information is new to the story as generally understood and told as part of Thunder Bay's popularly understood history.

Raymond Souster was born in 1921 in Toronto, Ontario, He lived there until his passing in 2012. He never lived outside of Toronto except during his military service in the Royal Canadian Air Force in the 40s. Outside of his military service he was employed by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce until his retirement in 1985. His literary career began with an association with John Sutherland and his literary magazine First Statement. This led to him launching a literary magazine titled Direction in 1943. He was awarded the governor general award in 1964, and continued publishing works well into the 70s and 80s.

After Souster ended Direction he began a partnership with Louis Dudek and Irving Layton to launch the Contact magazine from 1952-1954, and Contact Press from 1952-1967. This partnership with Louis Dudek would also lead to the two working together on many of Souster’s poetry collections such as Selected Poems released in 1956 and included poems by Souster chosen by Dudek for publication. Souster collaborated with a wide variety of poets through Contact Press and worked to bring attention to Canadian poetry. He was also in contact with many American poets such as Sidney “Cid” Corman, Jonathon Williams, Charles Olson, and Louis Zukofsky. Souster received feedback from these poets on his collections while providing them with feedback of his own. He was incredibly involved in the poetic community especially for Canadian poetry.

Outside of poetry, Souster also published two works of fiction, one titled The Winter of Time in 1949, and the other titled On Target in 1972. He published these under the pseudonyms Raymond Holmes and John Holmes. His contributions to the literary community, not only in his own poetry, but through his collaborations with others and his work in publishing makes him an influential force for many Canadian poets. His publishing work at Contact Press allowed him to uplift new Canadian writing which included work from Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1995, and the League of Canadian Poets named an annual prize after Souster in January of 2012.

Senator Norman M. Paterson was born in 1883 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. He began working for his father’s grain business before becoming the owner of multiple elevators, and his own grain and transportation business, N. M. Paterson and Sons. He was appointed to the senate in 1940 by then Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, and retired in 1981.

Outside of the senate and his business, Paterson was charitable, giving to multiple organisations focusing on education and church programs. He became the first Chancellor of Lakehead University in 1965, and held the position until 1971. He died in 1983 at the age of 100. He founded a charity in his name through the Presbyterian Church which is still operating. He was a key figure in Lakehead University's history, and he helped open the library on the Thunder Bay Campus which is named after him.

These records include text and photographs related to the Library's connections with Paterson.

Nigel Juhtund was a resident of Schreiber. He was a bachelor and worked in a lumber mill in Terrace Bay. He was originally from the Baltic region of Europe. Juhtund recorded all of his bird sightings for the Schreiber area from 1952 until 1985. The Federation of Ontario Naturalists honoured his work by granting him an award at their annual conference in 1990 held in Thunder Bay.

Records relate to water quality and fish research in Northwestern Ontario.

In 1986, the International Joint Commission’s Remedial Action Plan for the Great Lakes designated four Canadian areas of concern (AOC) in Lake Superior. The following areas were identified to have water quality impairments, Thunder Bay, Nipigon Bay, Jackfish Bay, and Peninsula Harbour (Marathon, Ontario). Pulp and Paper mills were identified as a major source of pollution. In Thunder Bay, the inventory and assessment projects were initiated as Stage 1 and completed by 1991. Stage 2, remedial strategies, completed in 2004. General issues: unpleasant foam, oily residue, and odour in waterways, high levels of chemicals in sediment and fish, loss of fish and wildlife habitat, impacts to sediment-dwelling organisms, and impacts on fish populations. Specific fish habitat concerns were water quality degradation, loss of wetland, degradation or loss of spawning substrate, and habitat destruction by dredging. Important fish population problems have occurred over time due to fish habitat loss from both physical and chemical changes on Lake Superior and its tributaries.
Many government agencies were involved with Lake Superior remedial action plans including the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Department of Fisheries Oceans (DFO), Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Lakehead Conservation Authority. Lakehead University was tasked with portions of the fish and fish habitat inventory in Stage 1 and providing an external review of the stage 2 plans for remedial action. Lakehead University sought Dr. Walter Momot, Professor of Ichthyology with this responsibility.

This collection is divided into three series involving the International Joint commissions Remedial Action Plans of the Canadian Portion of Lake Superior.

The School of Library Technology at Lakehead University operated from 1966 until 2002, administratively part of the Faculty of University Schools. It was one of only two university-based Library Technology programs in Canada.

Students enrolled in either a 2-year diploma program, or a post-graduate diploma program that could often be completed within 1 year. In the late 1980s, amid concerns that non-degree programs might no longer be funded by the Ontario government, there was a proposal to create a 3-year Bachelor of Arts in Library and Information Studies.

Einar and Hilma Kajander were immigrants from Finland, and were active in local organizations. Their son Art was a lawyer, and later Finnish Consul. Grandchild Ann is faculty at Lakehead University.

These photographs depict the Kajander family and their friends, in and about the Port Arthur area, approximately 1900 to 1970. The photographs include studio portraits and candid photographs printed at a variety of sizes. The images primarily depict family life and outdoor recreation.

Einar Kajander (1882-1973) and Hilma (Muhonen) Kajander (1886-1965) met in Canada and married in Port Arthur in 1909. Einar worked as a miner, and later opened a grocery store in Port Arthur. Both were involved with local sports organizations and the Finnish Labour Temple, and Hilma sang in Oras Choir.

Aatto Arthur Kajander (1913-1998) attended university in Toronto, was a lawyer in Thunder Bay for 55 years, and served as Finnish Consul appointed in 1957. He was also heavily involved in music and outdoor activities.

A publication of Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd. News articles cover shipping on the St. Lawrence Seaway and internationally, and related topics such as shipbuilding and the grain trade.

This small collection is an incomplete set of issues between 1965-1969.
