Lloyd Arthur Dennis (1923-2012) served as Co-Chair for the Provincial Committee on Aims and Objectives of Education in the Schools of Ontario (1965-1968) and was the co-author of the report “Living and Learning," commonly referred to as the Hall-Dennis Report. The fonds consists largely of records related to the Committee; the research, development, and writing of the Report; and responses after the Report's publication.

Dennis was born in 1923 in Aspdin, ON. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces 1942-1946, and earned a B.A. and B.Ed. from the University of Toronto. He began teaching elementary school in 1948, and worked as Principal at several schools from 1957-1965.

Dennis joined the Provincial Committee on Aims and Objectives of Education in the Province of Ontario first as Secretary and Research Director, and became Co-Chair with Justice Emmett Hall in 1967. After the Report's publication in 1968, he was responsible for public interpretation, and gave many speeches and presentations across the province.

Records related to the academic and artistic work of Dr. Laure Paquette, a faculty member in Political Science at Lakehead University from 1994 to retirement in 2021. These documents, in digital format, reflect her teaching, writing (including texts of many articles and books), and artwork, as well as the progression of her career at Lakehead and with many other institutions and organizations.

Includes records of ceremonies and events, and records related to the Coat of Arms of the University.

These are the records of the Chief Librarian (University Librarian) of Lakehead University (Lakehead Technical Institute, Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology.)

The records document the management and administration of the Lakehead University Library, including the construction of the Library building, policies, acquisitions, staffing, and more. Correspondence provides insight into the workings of the library during a period of library and academic expansion, computerization and transition.

The Chief Librarian had a significant role as a member of University administration, and participated on Faculty Council, Senate, and numerous committees. Records here reflect those bodies and their work throughout this time period, including proposed and new programs, enrollment, new construction, governance, and long range planning.

The Library's role in partnership with other organizations provincially, nationally, and internationally is also represented. Many libraries were adopting new technologies at this time, which allowed for more communications and cooperation, on projects including computerized cataloguing and inter-library loan.

The time period covered in these records includes major developments and changes within Lakehead University, and in the cultures and technologies of universities and libraries.

Lakehead University evolved from the Lakehead Technical Institute (LTI), which was established in 1946. From LTI, Lakehead became the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology in 1956. The Lakehead University Act was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1965, and Lakehead University was established. The first degrees granted by Lakehead University were in Arts and Science in 1965.

The Lakehead University fonds includes records of administrative offices and former administrators.

Records relate to the establishment and operation of the Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship in Thunder Bay, Ontario. They reflect matters concerning Port Arthur, Fort William, and Thunder Bay; and the development of Unitarianism and its institutions in North America more broadly.

The LUF is a non-profit organization that was incorporated into the Canadian Unitarian Council in 1984; after incorporation, the materials become more formal and there is more paperwork pertaining to the fellowships organization and governance.

The material includes reports, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photo negatives, floor plans for building, pamphlets and brochures, and several CDs, which included photographs and videos from special events. Majority of the materials are LUF specific, while there is also material pertaining to neighboring Unitarian organizations in Canada and America, and to the broader Unitarian Universalist Association\ Canadian Unitarian Council. Some records are specific to individuals while others relate to the entire fellowship.

The Lakehead Social History Institute is a partnership between historical researchers at Lakehead University and members of the Thunder Bay community. Active since 1997, the Institute supports and promotes historical research in the Northwestern Ontario region. The Institute facilitates research, trains new researchers, disseminates information about historical resources, conducts workshops, assists educational and community organizations, supports historical publications, and encourages local groups to preserve archival materials.

The fonds includes meeting minutes, correspondence, research projects, funding applications, workshop materials, membership lists, and publications. It also contains records of collaborations with educational institutions and community organizations, reflecting the Institute’s commitment to advancing historical research and public engagement.

Consists of reports, letters, and minutes of the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority.

Now the Lakehead Festival of Music and the Arts (https://www.tbmusicfestival.com/), the Lakehead Music Festival organized amateur music competitions and performances. The records consist of festival programmes for 1988, 1990, 1991, and 1992.

Video recordings of local French-language television broadcasts.

Records of Keewatinase, the Department of Indigenous Education, Faculty of Education, Lakehead University. A significant amount of the material relates to Native Language Instructors' Program, NLIP, after 2001 known as Anishinaabemowik.

The records include reports and administrative records, program newsletters, yearbooks, student and instructor handbooks, and ephemera.

Languages represented in the program include Ojibwe/Anishinaabemowin, Oji-Cree/Anishininimowin/Severn Ojibwe, and Cree/nēhiyawēwin.

Keiller-UL-drive contains an export of all Google Drive folders and files, covering a wide range of Library matters.
Keiller-UL-groups contains MBOX exports of local Google Groups, including Librarian and Library Staff communications
Keiller-UL-mail contains MBOX exports of Keiller’s email, particularly communications with Provosts and with OCUL lists
Keiller-UL-sites contains an export of Google Classic Sites, including the Lakehead University Library Intranet and Library Annual Reports.

Records include a nearly complete run of Kalevainen, the magazine of the order, with articles in both Finnish and English. Other publications, of Kalevan Naiset and Kalevan Riitarit, and about Kalevala.

Kalevan Naiset (Ladies of Kaleva) Ainikin Tupa was established in Port Arthur in 1955. This branch of the international organization held meetings and organized fundraisers and public events. Kalevan Naiset was the sister organization to Kalevan Riitarit (Knights of Kaleva) which also operated in Thunder Bay. Kalevan Naisit Ainikin Tupa began to disband after their last tea in 2025.

Einar and Hilma Kajander were immigrants from Finland, and were active in local organizations. Their son Art was a lawyer, and later Finnish Consul. Grandchild Ann is faculty at Lakehead University.

These photographs depict the Kajander family and their friends, in and about the Port Arthur area, approximately 1900 to 1970. The photographs include studio portraits and candid photographs printed at a variety of sizes. The images primarily depict family life and outdoor recreation.

Einar Kajander (1882-1973) and Hilma (Muhonen) Kajander (1886-1965) met in Canada and married in Port Arthur in 1909. Einar worked as a miner, and later opened a grocery store in Port Arthur. Both were involved with local sports organizations and the Finnish Labour Temple, and Hilma sang in Oras Choir.

Aatto Arthur Kajander (1913-1998) attended university in Toronto, was a lawyer in Thunder Bay for 55 years, and served as Finnish Consul appointed in 1957. He was also heavily involved in music and outdoor activities.

John Rafferty (1953-2019) was an educator, broadcaster, and politician who served as NDP MP for Thunder Bay-Rainy River from 2008 to 2015.

The records reflect election campaigns between 1997 and 2018, and his time in the House of Commons including speeches, clippings, and correspondence with constituents.

Jo-Anne Silverman is a former head of the Development Office of Lakehead University. These records relate to university fundraising campaigns throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The fonds contains a small amount of internal documentation, but primarily consists of public-facing documents.

The fonds consists of New Democratic Party (NDP) campaign and fundraising material. Reference documents have a national focus; some materials address local candidates and campaigns. Most records are 1980-1987; there is also a small amount of material related to the 2015 federal election.

The records related to cancer diagnosis and care in Northwestern Ontario, and across Ontario more broadly. Information found in this collection covers a wide variety of material which include, but are not limited to: cancer care prevention, early diagnosis and care, clinical trial notes and lectures, information on screening for cancer and breast cancer. Information regarding the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital (Ethics Committees, Pilot Projects) and the Lakehead University Centre for Health Care can be found within this collection on Cancer Care.

Consists of a memoir written by Horace Hunter "Holly" Parsons, an aerial timber sketcher whose career spanned over 50 years. This memoir contains information about the contracts he fulfilled for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, formerly the Department of Forests and Lands, and various logging, pulp, and paper corporations. Some contracts also involved mapping out the borders of areas where forest fires had occurred. These contracts spanned across Ontario and parts of Quebec, with a focus on the areas surrounding the District of Thunder Bay. Included in the memoir are personal anecdotes, descriptions of his trips, crew members he worked with over the years, and photographs taken by or given to "Holly" Parsons.

Dates of the memoir and accompanying photographs range 1922-1976.

Horace Hunter "Holly" Parsons (1902-1990) was born in Owen Sound, Ontario and lived in Etobicoke, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1925 with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry.

Records contributed by Harry E. Stafford (1882-1979), an engineer working in Port Arthur, Ontario. Includes a variety of reports, research, correspondence, and work done by or pertaining to Stafford. Much of this collection revolves around mining, forestry, and engineering. Includes a set of examinations from the early years of Lakehead Technical Institute.

Stafford was an electrical engineer, who worked for various industries around Northwestern Ontario and across Canada. After his retirement in 1950, he continued working as a consultant, and taught. He was also a textbook author.

Musical works by Harold Wevers, Canadian composer and bassoonist. These include orchestral works, chamber music, and solo pieces for various instruments.

Voices of the Grain Trade oral history project:
"Our volunteer interview teams in Thunder Bay and Winnipeg did their best to collect voices reflecting all major facets of Canada's international grain trade. As a result, you will find interviews with farmers, researchers, plant breeders, company owners, and railway employees blended in with the stories of grain handlers, inspectors, lake shippers, regulators, builders, marketers, and many more. Our voices are spread from Quebec City to Victoria, with the highest concentrations being from Thunder Bay and Winnipeg."

The records include audio recordings of oral history interviews, accompanied by transcripts and releases.

Frederick O. Robinson was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on Aug. 2, 1903. He attended public and high school in Port Arthur and then served his apprenticeship to the machinist trade in the C.N.R. shops. He worked for 25 years as a skilled machinist in the Port Arthur shops of the C.N.R. until his election to the Ontario legislature in 1943. He continued to work as a C.N.R. machinist between sessions of the legislature, and after his election to the office of mayor, he worked in the C.N.R. shops on weekends.

He entered public life in January 1943 when he was elected to the Port Arthur Board of Education. In August of the same year he was elected to the Ontario legislature as C.C.F. member for Port Arthur. He was M.L.A. for Port Arthur until his defeat in 1951. In civic affairs, he remained on the Board of Education until 1946 when he was elected as alderman. In 1949, he became Mayor of Port Arthur; he remained in this post except for 1952 when he was defeated until 1955 when he resigned to become personnel manager for the Public Utilities Commission. He left active political life at this time. He resigned from the Public Utilities Commission in 1966 because of ill health. In July, 1969, he died.

The Frederick O. Robinson fonds comprises 7 feet of correspondence, clippings, pamphlets, articles and other material and is contained in seventeen transfer cases. The folder titles in the main are those designated by Mr. Robinson. Some re-arrangement of the material has been effected in order to comply with the folder titles. Since the folders themselves were in no apparent order when .they were donated to the university, the following arrangement was thought to be most suitable for research purposes:

The Finnish Building Company was formed in 1909 and raised funds for the construction of the Finnish Labour Temple (Big Finn Hall) at 314 Bay Street.
