Orillia University Committee collection

The collection consists of newspapers (primarily the Orillia Daily Packet and Times) with stories related to the proposal to establish a campus of the Waterloo Lutheran University in Orillia.

The proposal made by the Orillia University Committee in September 1965 to Simcoe County Council to establish funding for the new university campus was approved, and $600,000 allocated. Fundraising commenced, but was halted in 1968 by the Ontario Ministry of University Affairs.

Age Friendly Giants fonds

Fonds consists of the records of the Age Friendly Giants project, initially conducted in 2017 through Age Friendly Thunder Bay and StoryCentre Canada. This project provided a digital storytelling workshop to 10 older adults, with a focus on neighbourhoods, communities, and aging at home. Results of the projects included 10 videos produced by the participants, posters and tip sheets, and several public events.

Phase II of Age Friendly Giants took place in 2019. Phase II included the development of an education kit to accompany the Phase I videos, Tea Talks held throughout the summer to develop community, the concluding Giants Castle event in October to share information about aging at home, and various media including cable television programs.

Phase I records include videos and handouts, as well as project documentation. Phase II records include project documentation, videos, and material produced for participants.

Northwestern Ontario Regional Child Care Committee fonds

The Northwestern Ontario Regional Day Care Committee / Child Care Committee operated from the 1970s to the 1990s. The Committee was a grassroots organization made up of child care workers, administrators, parents, and others concerned with the provision of child care in the region. The Committee was engaged in advocacy work, as well as supporting the work of child care centres and professionals.

Records of the Committee include minutes, membership lists, newsletters, correspondence, and other records associated with the advocacy activities of the organisation. Includes correspondence with governments and partner organizations.

Pirjo Hirvonen fonds (Kuvakulma)

This fond consists of master tapes and related materials from Kuvakulma, the monthly Thunder Bay-produced Finnish-language television programme.

Kuvakulma was produced between 1990 and 1998 by Pirjo Hirvonen and a team of volunteers, working at the McLean Hunter television station. The programme was an hour long, and focused on Finnish community happenings in Thunder Bay and Canada. Many episodes also featured segments from Finland, and brief English-language segments.

Pirjo Hirvonen was born in Finland, and moved to Thunder Bay in the 1980s. She has worked in multiple Finnish-language media in Canada, including writing for Canadan Uutiset, producing Kuvakulma and the Finnish-language religious programme Tiimalasi for television, and the weekly radio programme Ulkonainen for Lakehead University Campus Radio (CILU).

Harry E. Stafford fonds

Records contributed by Harry E. Stafford (1882-1979), an engineer working in Port Arthur, Ontario. Includes a variety of reports, research, correspondence, and work done by or pertaining to Stafford. Much of this collection revolves around mining, forestry, and engineering. Includes a set of examinations from the early years of Lakehead Technical Institute.

Stafford was an electrical engineer, who worked for various industries around Northwestern Ontario and across Canada. After his retirement in 1950, he continued working as a consultant, and taught. He was also a textbook author.

Harry Cliff collection

This collection contains photographs from the Silver Islet area taken somewhere around the early 20th century. Much of the photographs are of a family in Silver Islet as well as photographs of the surrounding areas. These include Sunshine, Fort William, Silver Islet, and other unidentified locations. There is a large photograph of Fort William within this collection that is dated at 1906, however the other images do not have exact dates.

Ontario Heritage Trust Orchid Reserves reports

Ecological monitoring reports and related reports for two orchid reserve properties managed by the Ontario Heritage Trust. The documents include an orchid census, as well as photographs and information about methods.

The sites were established in 1985 after a bequest of land in 1982. Monitoring reports from 1987 to 2000 were produced by Lakehead University staff and provided by the Ontario Heritage Trust. In 2009, responsibility for producing the reports was transferred to the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists.

Records consist of reports variously in physical or digital formats.
