Part of Steve Mantis fonds

The Ontario Network of Injured Workers’ Groups (ONIWG) was founded in 1991 out of a growing movement of Injured Workers Groups and provincial conferences addressing proposed changes to the Workers’ Compensation system. As a collective voice for people who have been injured or made ill on the job, ONIWG provides support for navigating the Workers Compensation system with representation from 18 chapters across the province of Ontario. Connected with communities, ONIWG works with labour organizations, legal clinics, the local Office of the Worker Advisor and government representatives to lobby and advocate for Injured Workers’ rights through research and collaborative action. Peer support, justice initiatives and collective education are key elements for ONIWG’s engagement in the effort to create WCS/WSIB policy change and provide group assistance to Injured Workers at all levels of community with campaigns, events, media and resources.

This series covers the years from 1989-2021. ONIWG documents include correspondence, lobbying, and strategic planning; and represent the work of Steve Mantis who served as the ONIWG representative on the WCB Board of Directors. Key issues include Injured Workers pensions, Days of Action, cost of living protection, chronic pain coverage, Appeals Tribunal, Research Action Alliance on the Consequences of Work Injury (RAACWI), the Meredith Report, and workers’ human rights. Records also include conference planning, executive minutes, reports, and funding.
